The Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center is accepting applications for a Graduate Staff Assistant (GSA): Student Advising and Program Support position for the appointment period of September 16, 2023 – June 15, 2024. This position is available immediately due to an unexpected resignation; we will make every effort to maintain a start date as close to September 16 as is feasible. Depending on start date, hours per week may be adjusted slightly to meet the 220 contracted hours.)

Program Description:
Within UAA, the Community Engagement and Leadership Education (CELE) Center unit provides students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes needed to contribute to thriving communities. Building authentic community and campus partnerships drive our work. CELE programs are centered around the areas of community-engaged learning, democratic engagement, leadership education, pK-12 student success and place-based initiatives.
CELE has an outstanding opportunity for a Graduate Staff Assistant to contribute to student community engagement and leadership development through individualized advising and program support.
Position Description:
The Graduate Staff Assistant: Student Advising and Program Support will work with staff in the CELE Center to support the implementation of several signature programs focused on leadership identity development, career connected learning, and democratic engagement programming.
Under the supervision of the Director of Community Engagement and/or the Executive Director of the CELE Center, the Graduate Staff Assistant will have the following responsibilities:
- Support the development of CELE Center programs through student recruitment, selection, and training processes for mentors/supervisors.
- Provide individualized feedback on student assignments for courses in the CELE Center portfolio (General Studies 350, General Studies 391, Leadership 298, and/or Leadership 495). Assignments for each course provide structured reflection opportunities for students to articulate their values, learning, leadership development experiences, and future goals.
- Coordinate logistics for co-curricular workshop sessions related to civic engagement and leadership identity development.
- Review student projects (leadership e-portfolios, community asset maps, other reflective work) and approve students for program completion.
- Coordinate event logistics for culminating student presentations.
- Work with campus and community partners to build a network of professionals committed to student leadership development and career-connected learning.
Qualifications:
- Full time graduate student at the University of Washington; ideal candidates will have at least 2 years left to completion of their degree program.
- Willingness to actively engage in addressing issues of structural inequity, power, and privilege in community-based experiences and student leadership development programming.
- Previous experience and/or deep interest in community engagement, leadership development, or career-connected learning.
- Experience providing constructive written feedback on student assignments through online course management platforms (such as Canvas).
- Comfort and aptitude with individual advising and support for undergraduate students; the ability to navigate and support students in navigating support systems on campus and in the community.
- Highly motivated and self-directed.
- Ability to work well as a member of a team and independently.
- Creative problem-solving skills, ability to balance a variety of time sensitive duties, flexibility, and attention to detail.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; excellent interpersonal communication skills.
Work Hours and Location: 220 hours per academic quarter; quarterly schedule negotiated with supervisor; majority of hours will be completed during weekday business hours from CELE office in Mary Gates Hall.
Duration: Autumn Quarter 2023, Winter Quarter 2024, and Spring Quarter 2024
