 First Day of Autumn Quarter Announcements  
 As Autumn 2023 Quarter begins, we would like to provide important dates, deadlines, and Autumn Quarter registration reminders;

*Please read all the way to the bottom so as not to miss valuable information.*

 DATES AND DEADLINES 
 Autumn 2023 Quarter

Wednesday, September 27 – Instruction Begins (HAPPY FIRST DAY!!)

Tuesday, October 3

  • Last day to make changes in registration via MyUW without being assessed a $20 Fee and possible tuition forfeiture
  • Last day to withdraw without owing tuition or fees

October 4-10

Unrestricted drop period – $20 fee (Tuition Forfeiture period begins)

Wednesday, October 4

Late Add Period – $20 fee and entry codes from academic departments required to add all courses beginning

Tuesday, October 10   

Last day to change to or from audit grade option. A $20 fee may be charged

Friday, October 20

Immunity Verification Requirement Due for Arriving Students

October 11-December 8

Late Course Drop Period – Use of Current Quarter Drop required and a $20 Fee is assessed

Tuesday, October 17

Last day to add a course through MyUW

November 3-19: Winter 2024 Registration Period I — Priority Registration for continuing students currently enrolled or for students who completed the previous quarter.

Friday, November 10: Veterans Day (observed) – Classes not in session. All UW offices closed. 

November 20 – Jan 2: Winter 2024 Registration Period II — Registration period opens at midnight for newly admitted students and returning former students.

November 23-24: Thanksgiving Holiday (observed) – Classes not in session. All UW offices closed. 

Friday, December 8

December 9-15: Final Examination Week

Friday, December 15

December 16-January 2

  • Winter Break

Please keep these deadlines and guidelines in mind, as the advising office cannot waive any of these fees or maneuver around many of these deadlines.  If you have any questions, please let us know.

 AUTUMN QUARTER REMINDERS
*Please remember the following as you are putting the finishing touches on your Autumn Quarter Schedule*:
 Independent Study / Research Credits:

  • EE 599 A – Independent Research – For MSEE students and Pre-Qualifying Exam Ph.D. students without an MS degree.  Maximum of 8 credits can be counted towards MS degree; Max. of 5 cr. for Ph.D.; faculty code needed.
  • EE 600 – For Ph.D. students who have an MS degree and post-Qualifying Exam/second-year Ph.D. students may register for EE 600. Not applicable as credit towards an MSEE degree; faculty code needed.
  • EE 700 – MSEE students – thesis research option only (cannot count toward coursework option); faculty code needed.
  • EE 800 – For post-General Exam Ph.D. students only; faculty code needed.

Please take care to register for the appropriate independent study credits for your degree level. All 400-level independent study and readings courses (e.g. – 490, 499) are not applicable towards graduate degrees. Also, graduate students wishing to take the ECE Department Colloquium series should register for EE 500, not EE 491.

 RA/TA: 

  • If you have received an RA or TA appointment for this quarter, you are required to register for a minimum of 10 credits to maintain funding
  • If Autumn will be your final quarter and you will graduate – please contact ECE Graduate Advising if you would like to Petition for a Reduced Enrollment.
 International Students:

 Ph.D. Qualifying Exams:

  • The deadline for students to complete the Qualifying Exam Application is Thursday, September 28, 2023. Once the application is submitted, the faculty advisor will receive a link to the online Faculty Advisor Letter of Recommendation which will be due Friday, September 29, 2023.
  • Students applying for the exam and Faculty entering recommendations online – please read the Qualifying Exam Requirements and Procedures resource page. Note: We have included a new section for Additional Guidelines for Scheduling Online Exams.  
  • Qual Exams for Fall 2023 will be either in person or online via Zoom in accordance with the Graduate School policyMasks will be recommended for all in-person meetings and the student will be required to schedule the conference room. After the exam panel is approved by the Qualifying Exam Faculty Lead, the student will be responsible for scheduling the exam sometime during weeks 6-8 of the quarter and make sure that all panel members are given meeting information. The exam date/time/zoom-room will be provided by the student to Graduate Advising by the third Friday of the quarter. 
  • We recently sent an email with more details about preparing to apply and schedule your Qualifying Exam in Autumn quarter so please read that thoroughly.
