The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation (ASF) is seeking outstanding undergraduate students studying science, technology, engineering, or mathematics at the University of Washington (UW) for their prestigious merit-based Astronaut Scholarship.
Washington Space Grant Consortium (WASG) is honored to serve as the local liaison to facilitate ASF’s application process. WASG will provide the initial application review and forward up to two candidates to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation for final review.
Purpose
The Astronaut Scholarship Foundation seeks to inspire, encourage, and facilitate Astronaut Scholars to embody highly respected astronaut characteristics, such as intelligence, ambition, self-motivation, high ethical standards, persistence, tenacity, adaptability, and a passion for science, exploration, and innovation.
Eligibility
- Please refer to the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation website for detailed information and criteria
- U.S. citizen
- College sophomore or junior (1-2 years of study remaining after applying)
- 3.3 GPA or higher
- You must be majoring in an undergraduate degree program in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM). Refer to the Astronaut Scholarship Major Fields of Study

- Astronaut Scholarships are not awarded for Psychology, Social Sciences, STEM Education and Learning Research, and pre-medical studies. Clinical medical research is not considered, however, bioengineering and biomedical research that apply science and engineering principles to problems in medicine are eligible.
- Should be a full-time student during Fall 2024, Winter 2025, and Spring 2025 to receive the full scholarship, which is up to $15,000

- Deadline: March 4, 2024 @12pm
- Finalists will receive an interview by March 15 and must submit additional application materials.

Application
To submit an application, prepare a 500-word personal statement to paste into our online application form. Also have your unofficial transcript and current resume/CV ready to upload. Applications will be considered according to the following criteria:
- Display of creativity and ability to move into unknown territory
- Potential, ability, and drive to do research, develop new ideas, pursue inventions, and/or pursue innovative technologies
- Exhibition of motivation, imagination, and exceptional performance in their field of academics and/or research
- Conveyance of intellectual daring and a genuine desire to positively change the world around them, both within the classroom and in their community
- Recognized as a leader through their activities on campus and/or in the community.
Personal statement tips:
- Review the ASF’s mission and vision.
- Read about previous ASF recipients and what made them stand out.
- Use your essay to tell us about your lived experiences.
- “Tell us something we can’t Google.” Focus on information we cannot learn about from your transcript or resume.
