TIPS FOR SUCCESS FROM STUDENT AFFAIRS /// October 24, 2024 |
Introducing the GPSS |
This week, we invited the leadership of the Graduate & Professional Student Senate (GPSS) to introduce themselves to the UW graduate student community. GPSS represents all UW graduate and professional students, and through this representation, they provide resources to support the student experience on campus, as well as at the state and federal levels. See below for specific details and thank you to Noah Hough (GPSS VP – Administration) and Richard Schure (GPSS President) for working with our office to introduce GPSS widely.
The GPSS is the governing body of all graduate and professional students at the University of Washington—accounting for all three campuses. Our student senators ensure student voices are heard within their departments, network with peers from across campus, develop professional communication and leadership skills, access valuable resources and opportunities, and enhance their resumes with unique experiences. We host events, provide funding for academic and professional development, and advocate at the local, state, and federal levels on behalf of the UW graduate and professional student body.
Halloween Bowling Night
Wednesday, October 30, 7 p.m.
HUB Games, Seattle campus
Get ready for a spooky night at the HUB Games for bowling, snacks, and drinks (21+ w/ ID) at the HUB Games. Costumes encouraged! Send questions to gpssvpin@uw.edu.
Sustained Dialogue
Wednesday, October 30, 5 p.m.
HUB 314, Seattle campus
Sustained Dialogue is a specific method of conflict resolution that involves diplomacy and openness to hearing opposing views rather than debate. The goal of our UW chapter is to offer regular dialogue facilitation sessions about topics people are interested in throughout this year starting with members of GPSS, and hopefully expanding to the greater student body in the future. The topic of this meeting will be how we can improve the GPSS.
17th Annual Legislative Reception
Wednesday, November 20, 6 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Burke Museum, Seattle campus
Join us for a night of dialogue, advocacy, and community building! Celebrate the passage of our Legislative Agenda with elected officials, enjoy a catered dinner, and discuss student issues. Business Casual attire required. Send questions to gpssvpex@uw.edu.
Become a part of the GPSS Community
Join GPSS Committees
A lot of GPSS Committees are open to all graduate and professional students so bring a friend! These committees focus on various aspects of graduate student life, such as academic affairs, student wellness, and advocacy, providing opportunities to influence policies and initiatives that impact the student community. Please check out our committees. You can also fill out this form to get connected with the committee(s) of your interest.
Become a GPSS Senator
Each UW degree-granting department or program may have up to 2 Senator seats. This is a great opportunity to develop professional communication and leadership skills and gain access to valuable resources and opportunities. Please reach out to your program adviser to discuss this if you want to become a GPSS Senator. We do accept Senator’s nominations on a rolling basis!
More information about GPSS? Connect with GPSS VP of Administration!
All questions and inquiries should be directed to Noah Hough (she/hers), GPSS Vice President of Administration, at gpssvpadmin@uw.edu. You can also schedule a meeting with Noah at Book a Meeting with GPSS VPA or attend her office hours every Tuesday, 12 p.m. – 1 p.m., at HUB 314, Seattle campus.
Again, thank you to Noah and Richard. We hope all UW students connect with the GPSS throughout their graduate careers.
Best,
UW Graduate School

UW Resources for Navigating the 2024 Election |
In a democracy, registering to vote is the first step in making your voice heard. The next is learning about the issues — local, state and national — so you can make informed choices as you complete your ballot. But sorting through the volume of information in the media, posted online and spread through word-of-mouth can be daunting. Determining what is true and what is not adds another layer of complexity. If you’re looking for accurate information on democracy and elections, the UW has resources.
