Study Skills Tutor – Mathematics (EEP & UW Academy)
The Robinson Center for Young Scholars (RCYS) supports RC students through drop in study sessions and/or scheduled day time appointments. Tutors provide tutoring and supplemental instruction in support of regular academic programs through one-on-one and group tutoring sessions, exam review sessions, and other duties as assigned. Tutors work in predetermined and agreed upon subject area only.
The Robinson Center values the experience of peer-to-peer learning. Peer-to-peer learning is an opportunity for students to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and what is understood independently. Tutors strive to work collaboratively with students to support the process of learning and skill building, in addition to fostering a growth mindset to provide a space for students to gain confidence in learning material independently.
Tutors generally work between operating hours of the Robinson Center, with some exceptionsYou must be able to work in the evenings in order to be hired as a tutor. Tutors generally work 4-10 hours a week. All tutoring activities are held in the Robinson Center or virtually through Zoom during the academic year unless specifically scheduled and agreed to by tutors and employers.
Reporting to the Director of EEP/ACAD the Study Skills tutor will have the following responsibilities:
- Working with students on an individual or group (maximum of 15 students per session) basis to support their learning.
- Assisting students with study skills or learning strategies that promote academic success.
- Based on agreed upon day and time, work a maximum of 10 hours per week including availability of a minimum of 2-3 hours for in-person drop-in tutoring at the Robinson Center (GUA Building), 2-3 hours of virtual drop-in tutoring, 2-3 hours of appointment-only tutoring, and 1 hour for program meeting.
Tutors provide individual or group instructional activities in support of regular academic
programs. Under supervision, Tutor duties may include: individual tutoring sessions, group
tutoring sessions, presentation at workshops, and other duties as assigned. Tutors may not
perform teaching duties.
Study Skills Tutor (EEP & UW Academy)
- In collaboration with Academic Coach, Program Coordinator, Lead Advisor and/or Program Director, make available and maintain a online reservations calendar for students to sign up for pre-scheduled appointments for tutoring;
- Document and ensure students follow a check-in process for all tutoring and/or study skills sessions.
- Ability to be flexible in working conditions. Examples include being able to switch between in person and virtual tutoring and supporting students during busy times of the quarter with patience and kindness.
- Maintain proactive written and verbal communication with the Director of EEP and Acad, Academic Coach, and other tutors.
- Manage time effectively to ensure tutoring shifts are attended and tutoring work is completed.
Position Complexities: This position will require the use of sound judgment and thorough understanding of higher education curriculum and learning best practices. The position requires the use of a collaborative and collegial approach with staff, administrators, campus community, and other stakeholders of UAA, to identify, develop and implement resources, models, methods, and policies that enhance the undergraduate academic experience and the preparation for successful graduation.
In particular this role needs to support students in making the transition to college level learning by providing group and individual academic support and intervention. This may include workshops, lectures, study groups, and individual meetings with a focus on empowering students to be responsible and engaged with their learning. Finally, this position works with minor students and will be expected to follow all policies and procedures that align with serving this population. Online training related to working with minors and mandatory reporting requirements will also be required of this position.
Position Dimensions and Impact to the University: The Study Skills Tutor works closely and collaboratively with a wide range of Robinson Center constituents, such as first-year EEP and Academy students, the Academic Coach, Program Coordinator, and additional RC staff members, to facilitate success in college courses and to enhance the students’ learning experience. This position directly supports the UW’s mission components of education by working with current students to fully engage in all UW has to offer as well as supporting the Early Entrance Programs.

Study Skills Tutor (EEP & UW Academy)
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in education, mathematics, Mathematics education, or an equivalent degree.
- Successful completion of collegiate-level coursework within the discipline in which the Study Skills Tutor will facilitate (e.g. pre-calculus, calculus, physics, etc.);
- At least one year of related academic support experience at the high school or college level;
- Experience working with a diverse array of students and families;
- Strong interpersonal skills, including oral and written communication skills; ability to communicate in a supportive and constructive manner with students; examples include active listening, responsiveness to student needs, and summarizing appointment topics in follow-up emails;
- Culturally aware and conscious of differentiated support for a diversity of student populations.
Desired
- Masters’ and/or advanced degrees in education, math or physics or a related field;
- Experience working in a studyskills and/or tutoring program in math or physics or related
- subject areas;
- Experience working with academically advanced, accelerate and/or highly-capable students;
- Demonstrated experience of ability to differentiate and responsive instruction toward learner profiles (academic readiness, personal interests, and cultural values)
- Experience directly working with and supporting diverse student populations; Examples include navigating academics, tutoring or teaching, and addressing areas of improvement;

Conditions of Employment
- This is a 6 to 9-month employment assignment during the regular academic year (fall, winter, spring), 3-4 days a week for a total of 4-10 hours, with some evening or weekend hours as agreed;
- This position works in an office setting, but due to the nature of the program, the office is often loud with high traffic of students entering and leaving the facility; This employee will need to be able to efficiently work in that type of setting, and should ideally enjoy being around energetic teenagers;
- Online training related to working with minors and mandatory reporting requirements will also be required for this position.
- Study Skills Tutor is highly encouraged to schedule a discussion with their supervisor about specific duties and responsibilities and work assignments at the beginning of the appointment, and therein after if duties change; in exceptional situations, ASEs will be given a job description (or changes to a job description, if applicable) as soon as practicable, but no later than the first day of the work assignment or reassignment.
