Department of Earth and Space Sciences Graduate Student Teaching Assistant Position
Employment Period: 03/16/2021 – 06/15/2021
Position Description: The Department of Earth and Space Sciences is an interdisciplinary physical sciences unit including geomechanics, geology, geobiology, geochemistry, geophysics, and space and planetary sciences.
We are seeking a TA for ESS 102, Space and Space Travel: Explores the sun, solar storms, observations from space and from Earth; Earth’s space environment, radiation belts and hazards, plasma storms and auroras, rockets and propulsion, human exploration efforts, societal impact, planetary systems and resources, and project highlighting space and its exploration.
The TA will assist the instructor with duties related to the teaching of the course including any of the following: leading field trips, attending lectures, instructing lab sections, co-instructing lecture sections, other duties as assigned.
TA responsibilities may include:
- attending all lectures
- evaluating student work, including grading exams
- arranging lab and discussion logistics and activities, and preparing course materials
- additional course-specific requirements of the instructors
Eligibility Requirements:
- academic standing as a UW Graduate Student and eligibility to hold a Graduate Student Assistantship
- availability for full appointment time-frame
- previous teaching experience
- academic or other experience with the disciplinary course content
- experience with STEM education/academic STEM background
- excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills
Applicants will be evaluated for these positions based on:
- Familiarity with the course and course subject matter knowledge
- Teaching practice, experience, and skill
- Experience with ESS department and ESS departmental coursework

Compensation: This is an ASE position governed by the UAW contract paid in accordance with current TA salary schedules.
