2022-23 Graduate Staff Assistant (GSA) Position with The Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence (GSEE)

The Office of Graduate Student Equity & Excellence (GSEE, formerly GO-MAP) is seeking a GSA to be a member of a highly collaborative team and serve a primary role in the overall coordination and implementation of programs and events that support outreach, recruitment, retention, and professional development initiatives focused on serving graduate students of color and underrepresented graduate students at the University of Washington. Emphasis will be placed on applicants with demonstrated experience and a commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion efforts.

About GSEE | GSEE is a unit in The Graduate School and works with the University to provide an innovative and inclusive graduate student community and experience. GSEE takes a leadership role in assisting departments with the recruitment and support of underrepresented graduate students at the University of Washington. We help build community on and off campus while enhancing scholarship and research. By providing opportunities for underrepresented graduate students to learn and grow through experiences rich in cultural, ethnic, and racial diversity, GSEE simultaneously enriches the environment for all UW students, staff, and faculty.

Appointment Period | This is a one academic year commitment from September 16, 2022 to June 15, 2023.

Eligibility | University of Washington graduate students enrolled full-time (minimum of 10 credits per quarter) throughout appointment.

Position Responsibilities (some of the listed responsibilities are shared between 2 GSAs)

  • Enhancing Graduate Student Experience

GSEE is committed to building a strong community amongst our graduate students of color, faculty, staff, and campus partners. Students regularly stop by our office to ask questions, inquire about resources, or simply to talk and get connected. Applicants must be comfortable meeting new people of diverse backgrounds, initiating conversation, and contributing to a welcoming atmosphere both in the office and at GSEE events. Tasks include being a liaison to the GSEE Graduate Student Advisory Board (GSAB), serving on internal and external committees, engaging with graduate students during events, keeping a pulse on graduate student concerns and needs around race and equity, leading student activities, and identifying UW tri-campus collaboration opportunities on the Bothell, Seattle, and Tacoma campuses.

  • Communications & Social Media Management

GSEE is not only committed to building a strong community on campus, but also online! We stay connected with our faculty, staff, and students through weekly e-newsletter communications and across our social media platforms. Tasks include curating creative weekly newsletters, graphic flyers for events, social media campaigns and messaging, contributing to quarterly newsletter content, crafting GSEE statements, carrying out communications plans, and assisting the development of GSEE’s overall tone of messaging alongside the Social Media Content Manager, a master’s student intern from the Communication Leadership department.

  • Event Planning & Logistics

When operating at full capacity, GSEE regularly hosts one event a week during the academic year. Tasks include developing and monitoring project management lists, coordinating guest speakers and volunteers, drafting talking points, creating event pages, reminder messages, and follow up messaging, and other event related duties as needed. Also partners with other campus organizations to provide logistical, event, and technical support as needed.

  • Other Duties as Needed

All GSEE staff support overall operations of the GSEE office including providing office coverage, answering phones, monitoring voicemails, responding to general GSEE emails, meeting with current and prospective students, attending weekly staff meetings, and supporting partnership meetings as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working with diverse populations, particularly U.S. racial and ethnic marginalized groups
  • Demonstrated commitment to social justice, equity, and inclusion
  • Highly organized, analytical, and motivated individual that can take initiative
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team setting but can also manage independent projects
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong event planning and/or program management background
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Word)
  • UW graduate student enrolled full-time (minimum of 10 credits per quarter) as of Autumn 2022

Salary and Benefits | Compensation is at the GSA level for which the student is eligible. This includes tuition coverage, health benefits, and a monthly stipend. The UW’s policy regarding graduate student service appointments is set forth in Executive Order 28 and this position is governed by a collective bargaining agreement between UW and UAW Local 4121.
