Greetings Graduate and Professional Students,
Are you interested in building community, developing leadership skills, and advocating for student needs? If so, the Graduate and Professional Student Senate (GPSS) invites you to enhance your UW experience by getting involved!
What is GPSS?
GPSS represents over 17,000 graduate and professional students at the University of Washington. Our Senators are students like you who:
  • Ensure student voices are heard within their departments.
  • Network with peers from across campus.
  • Develop professional communication and leadership skills.
  • Access valuable resources and opportunities.
  • Enhance their resumes with unique experiences.
We host events, provide funding for academic and professional development, and advocate at the local, state, and federal levels on behalf of the UW graduate and professional student body.
Time Commitment?
We understand you’re busy! The Senate meets about three times per quarter for three hours each—that’s just nine hours per quarter to make a significant impact beyond your lab or classroom.
How to Become a GPSS Senator:
Each UW degree-granting department or program can have up to two Senator seats. Here’s how you can get involved:
1. Self-Nominate: Submit a brief statement of interest to your Graduate Program Adviser by October 10th.
2. Department Confirmation: Appointments are confirmed by a non-student staff member in your department, typically someone in student services or a graduate program adviser.
3. Get Started: Once confirmed, you’ll be integrated into the GPSS network and can start making a difference!
For departments with multiple programs or concentrations, representation can be tailored to best fit your community’s needs.
Even More Opportunities:
Not sure about the Senator role? Consider becoming a GPSS Liaison or joining a committee. These positions allow you to:
  • Represent student interests on campus-wide committees.
  • Serve as a link between GPSS and other organizations.
  • Have a flexible time commitment with fewer meetings.
Upcoming GPSS Events:
Curious but not ready to commit? Attend our upcoming events to meet current members and learn more in a casual setting. It’s a great way to see if GPSS is right for you—no pressure!
