Our names are Henry Jacqmotte and Om Shah, and we both attend the Lakeside School in North Seattle. We founded the Seattle Science Lab, a  501(c)(3) organization dedicated to making STEM more accessible for high school students throughout Washington.

This past fall, we launched and led a STEM mentorship program that paired high school students with undergraduate and graduate mentors from the University of Washington and Seattle University. Over the course of the program, 13 high school students worked closely with their mentors to develop science capstone projects, which they presented at the Seattle Science Lab Symposium.

Our pairings explored projects ranging from an extensive literature review on artificial intelligence applications in medical imaging, to designing a machine learning algorithm that classifies subtypes of liposarcoma, and even creating a 3D-printed bio-inspired rocket fin aimed at reducing aerodynamic drag.

Given the success of our fall program, we are excited to expand it for our upcoming Winter SROP (Summer Research Opportunity Program). This 12-week program, running from February to April, will pair high school students with undergraduate and graduate mentors who will guide them in developing a capstone project on a scientific topic of their choice. These projects can take the form of a literature review, experimental analysis, or prototype for a novel technology.

To recognize the contributions of our mentors, we are offering a $200 stipend for mentor participation. Mentors will meet with their mentees virtually on a weekly basis, providing guidance, feedback, and support throughout the project.

We are reaching out to explore the possibility of connecting with undergraduate and graduate students from your lab who may be interested in serving as mentors. We believe this opportunity offers a meaningful way for students to develop their leadership and teaching skills while making a tangible impact on high school students passionate about STEM.

For more information, please see our attached presentation. Interested students can sign up to be a mentor through our registration form.

Best,
