Your impact:
We are seeking a highly motivated and technically proficient Embedded Software Engineering Intern to join our Research and Development team. In this role, you will work directly alongside senior engineers to design, implement, and verify safety-critical firmware for next-generation medical devices. You will contribute to meaningful code that impacts patient lives, operating within a structured, highly regulated environment that prioritizes architectural integrity, functional safety, and robust cybersecurity.
- Software Development: Debug modular firmware components in C/C++ for low-power microcontroller-based architectures (32-bit ARM Cortex-M or equivalent), ensuring adherence to strict internal coding standards and engineering style guidelines.
- Hardware-Software Integration: Debug and test custom peripheral drivers including SPI, I2C, UART, ADC, and PWM. Utilize laboratory equipment such as digital oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and multimeters to isolate hardware vs. software execution faults.
- Verification & Testing: Author, execute, and document unit and integration test scripts within an automated Continuous Integration (CI/CD) pipeline. Characterize system execution, track functional safety coverage metrics, and maintain strict traceability matrices. Create automated unit, integration and software system tests. Verify software build stability.
- Regulatory Documentation: Produce rigorous lifecycle documentation including Software Detailed Designs (SDD), code review notes, and anomaly report rationales in strict alignment with quality management system rules.
- Code Reviews & Collaboration: Actively participate in peer code reviews, presenting your work to senior staff and absorbing architectural feedback to refine code efficiency and runtime predictability.

Onsite roles require full-time presence in the company’s facilities. Field roles are most effectively done outside of the company’s main facilities, generally at the customers’ or suppliers’ locations.

You’ll thrive in this role if:
- Academic Standing: Currently enrolled in an accredited B.S. program (entering senior year) or pursuing an M.S./Ph.D. in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or a closely related technical discipline.
- Core Languages: Strong foundational proficiency in embedded C++
- Computer Architecture: Solid understanding of microcontroller architectures, registers, interrupt service routines (ISRs), timers, and volatile vs. non-volatile memory layout.
- Analytical Mindset: Exceptional problem-solving skills, an eagerness to learn complex regulatory workflows, and strong written and verbal technical communication habits.
Preferred (Bonus) Experience
- Prior academic project or internship experience working with a Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) like FreeRTOS, ThreadX, or Micrium, focusing on task scheduling and synchronization primitives (semaphores, mutexes).
- Basic familiarity with Software of Unknown Pedigree (SOUP) evaluation or cybersecurity hygiene considerations for connected medical platforms.
- Experience with scripting languages (such as Python) for parsing test logs or automating test bench configurations.
- Exposure to static analysis tools, code coverage analyzers, or hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) test setups.

Heartstream Transparency Details
The pay range for this position is $28.00 to $31.00 hourly. The actual base pay offered may vary depending on multiple factors including, job-related knowledge/skills, experience, business needs, geographical location, and internal equity.
At Heartstream, it is not typical for an individual to be hired at or near the top end of the range for their role and compensation decisions are dependent upon the facts and circumstances of each case.
